3 Part Video Series

Part 1

October 27, 2011

Geneva and Eugene Hayes have been touched by two major tornadoes at their home in Chalybeate in Lawrence County. Their home was missed by less than a quarter mile in 1974. They pitched in to help their neighbors never suspecting they would be the ones needing help this year. Although 13 family members rode out the storm safely in a storm shelter, Geneva's sister, Zora Lee Hale, refused to go underground and was killed when her home was destroyed. Also featured today is Kathy Stewart who watched her house disintegrate around her in 1974. She was at Lawrence County Hospital this year working as a nurse when storm survivors began telling her how everything in her neighborhood was destroyed. Stewart made a frantic run home not knowing if her family was safe or if she still had a home.

Part 2

October 28, 2011

Eddie Cosby survived two strikes to his home by monster tornadoes. An F5 destroyed his home nearly killing him April 3, 1974 and an EF5 destroyed his home April 27, 2011 but leaving him with only bruises. Cosby survived this year's storm by hiding beneath the porch of his home from 1974, the only part of the house to survive the storm. Also featured today is East Limestone resident Chris Preston whose home in 1974 was bracketed by an F5 tornado and a half hour later by an F4 tornado. He ran out to help victims of the 74 storm and found himself in the strange position of doing exactly the same thing 37 years later. His house took a direct hit from the April 27th storm but safely sheltered he and his family in the basement. It will have to be torn down due to unrepairable structural damage.

Hillard Frost, EMA Director for Lawrence County, recalls his experiences as a rescuer in 1974 and compares the '74 storm to this year's EF5 that swept through his county.
